Have you ever read a book where the dragon feels more like a scaly motorcycle with anger issues than an actual living, breathing creature? Ever wondered when reading that shifter novel, is that how a real wolf, or leopard would act? Each book I write features animals, and Salt, Sky and Fire delivers more than just a dragon.
When I write my stories, I want people to feel the magic of being near big, dangerous animals. No one will ever bond with a dragon, but I infused my years of experience bonding with animals like wolves, cheetahs, sea lions, and hawks into my animal characters.
The most important thing about working with exotics? Respect is earned, never assumed.

When you work with predators — big cats, large birds of prey, intelligent marine mammals — you learn very quickly that they have moods, and will read you better than you read them. There were a couple distinct moments in my career where I was reminded exactly where I stand in the food chain. You can never take anything for granted, and yes, I had a wolf teach me respect in the most terrifying way possible. We eventually worked through it.
I wanted readers to feel the awe and healthy terror of being at the mercy of a powerful creature. The razor’s edge between wonder and “I might die” that makes you feel alive.
Why this matters for fantasy readers
I don’t want dragons and other magic creatures that feel like plot devices. I wanted my creatures to have personality — ancient, proud, fiercely protective, and more than a little judgmental. I also wanted more than dragons, so I included critters that aren’t found in most fantasy books – hippocamps and a sphinx with an attitude.
If you love stories where the magical creatures feel real, and where respect for animals isn’t just window dressing… then Salt, Sky, and Fire might be your next obsession.
