Where do you find it? The inspiration to write, to create, to change your life; where do you find your inspiration? Do you find it in your meditation? A walk through nature? A song on the radio?
We all get those thoughts, or feelings that enter our brains and whisper softly, seductively: Do this! But how often do we follow through? What keeps us going?
There are times in your life when a certain song will help you find your inspiration or get you through those tough moments. Here are some of mine! They’re 80’s songs; I told you once before how much I love them! And I am a product of that generation.
Whenever I was feeling blue about a boyfriend, I’d listen to:
When I was a gym rat, and needed inspiration during my workouts, I’d put on:
Or
And when I needed to find that inner strength to make a major life change:
At some point in my life these songs spoke to me, on some level that made me reach down and find the will to keep going. Are they cheesy? Sure, maybe, but they had the power, at some moment in my life, to inspire me to keep going. Finish that work out, give love another chance, take a giant leap of faith.
What are some of your inspirational songs? What makes you want to get up and move? Which one keeps you going when you feel like you want to quit?
I listen to country music almost exclusively, so listening to these three songs was a nice change. I find the songs I listen to vary with the book I’m writing
Writing mood, work mood, definitely influence which tunes I listen to.
Wow, I remember a lot of this fondly. For me, I mostly used music as inspiration when I was powerlifting. Listening to ACDC or Bruce Springsteen always gave me that aggressive edge.
ACDC and Bruce! Great choices for gritting out those reps!
Holding out for a Hero is one of my all time favorite sounds and I LOVE to workout to this song. I blast is it in my car!
I can’t deny, I still sing it loud and proud, and watch Hub shake his head! 🙂
Good songs. Enjoyed them. Here are a couple that always inspired me when I was younger and still do today!
I always imagine the Lord singing these to me…or the angels!

Oh, I love JT and CK! Such a good duo! I was sorry to miss them when they came through my town not long ago…
My favorite is “Marathon” by Rush – and yes, it’s also from the 80s! I love “Holding out for a Hero” too. Thanks for sharing!
Love Rush, although I was not a fan in the 80’s. Took my husband to show me their finer points, and then when I really paid attention to the lyrics I made him cringe by saying “But, they’re nothing but a bunch of D&D playing, Tolkien-fantasy geeks!” I love Limelight!
I like a variety of music, but music that reminds me of certain times–like 80s music–often will give me a nostalgic pep. 🙂
Whenever I want to feel like a teen again, I just put on the 80’s. 🙂
80s music is the best. I’m an 80s baby so I must have grown up with the music of that decade on in the background. Cheesy some it may be but who cares what a person listens to? If it does the job and inspires you that’s great. The Final Countdown by Europe always picks me up!
That’s right, who cares? I found out I’m much happier when I don’t care what other people think of my tastes. It works for me, doesn’t have to for them.
Solsbury Hill is pure poetry, one of my favorites. I’ve always thought it had a mystical element and referred to Stonehenge, which is built on Salisbury Hill. They’re pronounced the same.
It’s one of those songs that just stays with you.
All great picks Serena! I tend to turn to the newer songs when I write. I don’t look back to find the teen in me. I look for the teen of today hidden within. My play list sounds slightly different. But your list is great!
Thanks Debra!
Fun post, Serena. I am an 80’s kid too, but I have to admit my greatest (somewhat cheesy) inspirational song of all times comes from the 70’s duo, the Carpenters. As as songwriter and singer, it makes a lot more sense. As a shy kid I remember hearing the words “Sing, sing a song. Sing out loud. Sing out strong.” To this day, those words resonate with me. I sing, and boy, do I sing out loud and strong!
Keep on singing, Tina!
